Consternation as investors ‘commodify’ Noosa’s image

contributed by Rowland Hill

Noosa residents fought for 60 years for environmental protections that have made Noosa what it is today. Now they are watching with consternation as their success is ‘commodified’ by investors buying into the lucrative SSL phenomenon that has swept through Noosa.

One in five dwellings in Noosa’s coastal strip is now available for SSL (Council survey), and in 2022 their owners – more than 80 per cent living outside Noosa – collected almost $180m in rent (AEC Economics). The majority was spent outside Noosa (Council estimation).

Many of the ‘environmental warriors’ who delivered the protections that make Noosa so ‘liveable’ ironically are the ones copping the loss of residential amenity, rubbing salt into their wounds.
