Neighbours Not Strangers,
Homes Not Hotels: Noosa

Neighbours Not Strangers Noosa logo. Noosa residents objecting to AirBNB growth in Noosa Shire.

Many Noosa Shire residents are concerned about the proliferation of Short Stay Accommodation (STA) - unstaffed hotels - in residential areas of the Shire. Some will know STAs as homes that are advertised on sites like AirBNB and Stayz, but companies that have traditionally booked hotels, like Booking.com and Expedia.com, are marketing private homes as holiday rentals as well - but now, unbelievably ..... ratepayer-funded Tourism Noosa is as well !!!!!  (August 2023)

As Noosa Council has the authority to approve applications for private homes in our neighbourhoods to become these unstaffed hotels, it is up to we residents to tell our Councillors how we feel about the situation. Council elections are being held in March 2024, and our votes can determine how Council will act on this issue in the years ahead.

This worldwide trend is adversely impacting Noosa residents, and drastically reducing the pool of long term rental accommodation, exacerbating the current housing crisis.

It is acknowledged that truly "hosted" BNBs, where residents (real hosts) welcome guests into their spare rooms do have a place in the range of accommodation options in our community.

Get Involved

We want Noosa Councillors, Candidates for the 2024 Local Government Election, and our local Members of Parliament to be aware of our concerns about the proliferation an impact of Short Term Accommodation properties (unstaffed hotels) in the Noosa Shire.  Our objectives can be found here.

If you are a Noosa resident, you can help us to achieve these objectives in many ways:

  • by raising your concerns in person with, or by writing* to, our Councillors (their contact details are here),

  • by writing about your concerns to other government officials and NGOs (we have started an Address Book here)

  • sharing your own experiences with STAs near you by emailing your story to us at NNSNoosa1@gmail.com

  • commenting on the posts on this site, adding your own views

  • letting us know if STAs without Council approval or without correct signage are operating near you, again by emailing us,

  • by displaying this bumper sticker below (on your car, garbage bin etc). Email us your address and we will pop one in your letterbox.

Your emails will be treated in the strictest confidence.

*we will add some draft letters to help you soon
